The Alameda

Gibraltar Botanic Gardens

What is Flowering in ‘the Alameda’ Today?

Gibraltar has a Mediterranean climate of cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers.  Whilst July and August can sometimes experience no rainfall at all, the Rock’s annual rainfall is, on average, higher than that of London.  Our climatic conditions and Mediterranean seasonality have a strong influence on the timing of flowering plants.

Although more plants flower during our spring (March-May) than any other period, the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens showcase a range of flowers throughout the year.  Galleries illustrating a selection of flowering plants are offered as links on the right, by month.  A more comprehensive list of what’s in flower during every month of the year can be downloaded as a pdf. document here. What's in flower .

In particular, our specialist collections provide flowers during every month of the year.  For example, of the 170 species and varieties of Aloe held at the Alameda, some can be found in flower regardless of the timing of a visit.  To experience a large variety of flowering plants, a visit to the Alameda should take in the Main Walk, the succulent collections around Elliot’s Column and the South African beds (a plan of the Gardens is available here).
